Echoes of the Past: NCMM unleashed a modern gallery of Nigerian antiquities timeline

On April 11th, at the National Museum Lagos, NCMM with major sponsorship support from IHS NIGERIA proudly unveiled the new permanent exhibition, Echoes of the Past; a landmark moment in our continued effort to preserve and present Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

Earlier in the day, the Director General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Olugbile Holloway, welcomed the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, and her delegation on a guided exclusive tour of the exhibition ahead of its official opening. It was a truly meaningful experience to walk her through the galleries, sharing the stories, craftsmanship, and historical depth behind some of Nigeria’s most treasured antiquities.

Echoes of the Past takes visitors on a remarkable journey through time; beginning with the ancient Nok terracotta dating as far back as 500 BC, and moving through centuries of artistic and cultural evolution to the iconic Benin Bronzes of the 17th century. Each piece tells a story; of innovation, identity, and the enduring legacy of our people.

Opened to the public later on the same evening and beyond, this exhibition represents a significant shift in how we present and interpret our heritage. It is not just a display of objects, but an immersive experience designed to reconnect us with our roots and inspire a deeper appreciation for the richness of our history.
