This project involves creating detailed 3D scans of artifacts, ensuring they are preserved digitally and accessible to a broader audience. These digital representations allow people worldwide to explore and appreciate our cultural heritage, regardless of their physical location.
Digitizing artifacts is not merely about creating digital copies; it encompasses a comprehensive process of tagging each object with relevant information. This meticulous tagging includes historical context, cultural significance, and other pertinent details, transforming the digital artifact into an immersive and educational experience. By doing so, we provide an enriched understanding of each piece, fostering a deeper appreciation of our heritage.
The benefits of this project are manifold. First and foremost, digitization helps preserve artifacts for future generations. Physical artifacts are vulnerable to deterioration over time due to environmental factors and handling. By creating digital versions, we safeguard these treasures against potential loss or damage. Furthermore, digital artifacts can be used in a wide array of digital solutions, including virtual exhibitions, educational platforms, and interactive applications. These applications offer innovative ways to engage with history and culture, making learning more dynamic and interactive.
The project also aligns with global trends in museum practices, where digital innovation is increasingly playing a pivotal role. By digitizing our collection, the National Museum Onikan joins a growing number of institutions worldwide that leverage technology to enhance their offerings. This not only increases our museum’s visibility on the global stage but also attracts a diverse audience, ranging from researchers and educators to history enthusiasts and casual visitors.
The success of this project is largely due to the collaborative efforts of our dedicated partners. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to @truedismedia and @ak0ji_ for their unwavering commitment and hard work. Their expertise and passion have been instrumental in driving this project forward, ensuring that each artifact is meticulously scanned and accurately tagged.
The ongoing artifacts digitization project is a testament to the NCMM’s commitment to preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. By embracing modern technology, we are making significant strides in ensuring that our history is not only preserved but also made accessible to a wider audience. This project exemplifies how traditional heritage and modern technology can converge to create powerful educational tools and experiences.
The digitization project at the National Museum Lagos represents a forward-thinking approach to cultural preservation. As we continue this journey, we remain committed to enhancing the accessibility and educational value of our collections. We look forward to the continued progress and the many exciting possibilities that lie ahead. Thank you once again to our partners and supporters for their invaluable contributions to this transformative endeavor.

On 14th of July 2024, marked a significant occasion as our Director General Olugbile Holloway welcomed a distinguished delegation from the U.S. President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement (U.S. PAC-ADE). This visit underscored the strengthening ties and ongoing dialogue between the United States and our country, particularly in fostering deeper connections with the African diaspora.
The delegation was comprised of notable figures, including Williams Stevens, the U.S. Consul General, and Mr. Kevin Young, the Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. They were accompanied by other esteemed representatives from the U.S. PAC-ADE, each bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the discussions.
The delegation’s itinerary began at the historic National Museum Onikan, a site of immense cultural and historical significance. Here, they were greeted warmly and given a comprehensive tour of the museum’s extensive collections. The exhibits at the National Museum Onikan provided the delegation with a profound understanding of our nation’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of the African diaspora. This visit also allowed for the exchange of ideas on preserving and promoting cultural heritage, as well as potential collaborations on future projects.
Following the visit to the National Museum, the delegation proceeded to the John K. Randle Center for Yoruba Culture and History. This modern cultural hub serves as a testament to the vibrancy and resilience of Yoruba culture. At the John K. Randle Center, the delegation was received by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The Governor’s reception was a highlight of the visit, providing an opportunity for high-level discussions on cultural exchange, education, and economic partnerships.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his enthusiasm for the delegation’s visit and emphasized the importance of such engagements in strengthening bilateral relations. He highlighted the shared history and cultural bonds between Nigeria and the United States, particularly through the African American community. The Governor also discussed ongoing initiatives in Lagos State aimed at fostering cultural preservation, education, and economic development, and explored avenues for collaboration with the U.S. PAC-ADE.
Williams Stevens, the U.S. Consul General, conveyed the U.S. government’s commitment to deepening ties with the African diaspora. He spoke about the significant role that cultural institutions play in this process and commended the efforts of Nigerian institutions in preserving and promoting African heritage. Mr. Kevin Young added to this by sharing insights from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, illustrating how cultural diplomacy can bridge gaps and foster mutual understanding.
The discussions were fruitful, with both sides expressing a strong desire to continue working together on various fronts. Potential areas of collaboration include joint exhibitions, educational exchange programs, and initiatives to promote cultural tourism. These efforts aim not only to celebrate shared heritage but also to create economic opportunities and foster mutual respect and understanding.
The visit of the U.S. PAC-ADE delegation, led by Williams Stevens and Kevin Young, was a significant step in reinforcing the ties between our nations. Director General Olugbile Holloway and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s warm reception and productive discussions set a positive tone for future engagements. The exchange of ideas and the shared commitment to cultural preservation and education signal a promising path forward, one that will benefit both nations and honor the rich tapestry of the African diaspora.

These stools were taken during the punitive expedition of 1897 and date back to the 17th century. The Oba was extremely moved by this gesture and NCMM reassured the royal court of our renewed commitment to work hand in hand to preserve, protect and showcase our collective cultural heritage to the world
In March 2002, the Benin Royal Palace, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture in Nigeria formally requested that “all the cultural property belonging to the Oba of Benin illegally taken away by the British in 1897 should be returned to the rightful owner, the Oba of Benin.”

The Netherlands in October 2020 returned a 600 years old Ife Terracotta. In March 2021, the University of Aberdeen Scotland agreed to return a Benin Bronze from its collection. In April, 2021, NCMM received a bronze piece from Mexico. The University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom has also agreed to return a disputed Benin bronze. NCMM will be commencing the procedure for the repatriation of this piece soon. We have also secured a date in October 2021 in which we shall repatriate antiquities from the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
After many discussions commenced by the NCMM under the Benin Dialogue Group (BDG), a group that has members cutting across representatives of the Federal government, the Edo State government, the Royal Benin Palace and representatives of many important museums in Europe, it has finally been agreed that the Benin Bronzes in many of these museums will be returned. A Trust was formed with representation from all parties including the NCMM, Royal Benin Palace, Edo government and the Foreign Museums. The Edo State Government took further interest in the agitation to return these antiquities to Benin City. The Governor also introduced into Edo State annual appropriation, money towards constructing this museum.

It gladdens the heart to note that considerable attention is recently being paid to the museum Institution in Nigeria. The immediate past administration led by Mohammadu Buhari demonstrated this with his last-minute romance of the institution in the twilight of his administration. The rendezvous, nevertheless, birthed some concrete assurances, some of which have received immediate action, and others to be followed up in time.
On the International Cultural scene, Nigeria appears to be gaining huge attention, occasioned by the repatriation and return of precious Benin bronzes adorning scores of museums in Europe, the Americas, and other parts of the world. Thanks to the deft diplomatic and negotiative skills of the Abba Tijani led NCMM which have recorded massive positives and unprecedented responses from holders of our cultural materials, turned collaborators and development partners.
The Commission joins others in the Art and Culture Community to warmly welcome Barr. Hanny Musa Musawa, the New Hon. Minister for Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy. We are particularly excited by her energy and spark with which she promised to support the Commission especially, in ensuring the delivery of an Abuja National Museum during the administration of President Bola Tinubu. It is an assurance that brings so much hope. We are ready to hold on to her hands in this relationship.

It was a magnificent outing at the NCMM Headquarters in Abuja when the Department of Monuments, Heritage & Sites threw a stellar send-off party in honour of Ms. Victoria Ndidi Osuagwu who on the 7th of March, 2023 retired from the service of the Commission after Thirty-Five years of meritorious contributions.
A massive outpour of encomiums from invited guests and staff members across all Departments underscored the pleasant personality and disposition of the retiree.
At the ceremony, the Director-General, Prof Abba Tijani, who was represented by the Director of Museums, extolled Ms. Osuagwu due to her outstanding qualities of intelligence, diligence and meticulousness, virtues he said are rarely combined in just one person.
Highpoints of the event were presentation of gifts, cutting of the retirement cake and dance by the retiree with her fellow Directors who were all in attendance to honour one of their own.
Born on 12th July 1963 in Owerri, Ms. Osuagwu attended the prestigious Queens College, Yaba, Lagos for her secondary education, and the great University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where she graduated with combined honours degree in History and Archaeology. She later acquired a Masters Degree in in Public Administration from the University of Lagos.
Her career in the Commission began in 1988 as an Ethnographer and rose to become a Curator of PortHarcout Museum before crowning her career by becoming a substantive Director in 2021.
Ms. Victoria Osuagwu goes down in the annals of the NCMM as the 6th Director of Monuments, Heritage & Sites and the 1st female in that position.
We all wish her a very pleasant retirement and Good luck in her next level of service to humanity

Recently, the Director-General, Prof. Abba Tijani led a Nigerian Delegation to Switzerland under the Swiss-Benin Initiative to discuss the future of Benin Collections in Swiss Museums.
The Initiative which brings together, Swiss and Nigerian Curators, Academics and Practitioners in the field of Heritage Management discussed possible cooperation projects and development partnerships between the two countries.
In the last 2 years, 8 Swiss Museums came together under the leadership of Museum Rietberg of Zurich to investigate the provenance of their holdings from ancient Benin. The findings, which have been completed gave birth to the Swiss-Benin Forum, a platform created as an opportunity to launch the report and hand over the findings to a delegation of parties from Nigeria, led by the NCMM DG, Prof Abba Isa Tijani.
During the visit, the Nigerian Delegation took time to visit Swiss Museums which include, Zurich, Base, Gallen and Geneva Museums.
The Director-General was accompanied on the international mission by the Director of Research, Planning & Publications- Mr. Theophilus Umogbai.
