22 Benin Bronzes Handed-over by Germany to Nigeria in Abuja

German Foreign Minister, @abaerbock Annalena Baerbock and @claudiaroth_official  Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and Media, has today, returned 22 Benin objects to Nigeria.

The ceremonial handover held in Abuja saw the presence of the minister of Information and Culture, Hon. Lai Mohammed, Director General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Prof. Abba Isa Tijani, Director of Museums, Mal Abdul Mohammed Gimba among others.

These collections are from German museums and over a thousand more works of art from the  @rautenstrauchjoestmuseumkoeln, @markkhamburg, @humboldtforum, @grassimuseum.skd and the Linden Museum will follow.

Annalena Baerbock said at the handover: “It was wrong that these Benin bronzes were stolen and it was wrong that our country kept them. Even if the return cannot heal all wounds, it is an important step in coming to terms with Germany’s colonial past. We also want to face this part of our history.”

 Claudia Roth emphasized: “At this moment, which not only connects our two countries but also our continents, something new begins. It’s a good day when someone long gone returns to the place where they belong. It is a day of joy for us too.”

 These objects date back to the royal palace of Benin Kingdom in 1897.

It gladdens the heart that once again we are seeing the rebirth and resuscitation of this very informative magazine, the production of which has been halted for over six years due to dwindling finances of those times which in no small ways and manner affected various facets of the Commission’s operations. Huge thanks to Prof. Abba Tijani and the administration he leads for uncommon resourcefulness, support and encouragement which this Committee has received, leading to the resurrection and rebranding of this publication.

This maiden edition of “The Nigerian Museum” News bulletin presents a special content which celebrates the commendable strides of the Abba Tijani – led Administration which coincidentally clocks one year with this release.

Abba Isa Tijani, the enigmatic Professor of Museology and Anthropology commenced his responsible leadership of the Commission after his deserved appointment one year ago. In a short space of time he has led a management which to a great extent repositioned the Commission. New standards are being set with more encouraging result pouring in. An astute administrator and erudite academic, he has demonstrated in no small means his ability to fix problems and achieve results. We therefore have the pleasure of cataloguing among others, some of his achievements within a short period of his leadership.

Some of Africa’s material cultural assets are warehoused outside the continent. Most of these assets as we all know were looted during wars by Europeans, ethnographic expeditions or acquired under questionable conditions and auctions in various art markets around the globe. Notable among such ethnographic material assets are some of Nigeria’s collections that form the Nucleus of our classical arts. The National Commission for Museums & Monuments which holds the mandate to preserve and care for these National treasures has over the years been in the forefront of negotiations and demand for the repatriation and return of these cultural artifacts of Nigerian origin. These efforts though, have been yielding dividends in trickles in the past, but worthy of note is the recent development in the life of this administration that a very large haul of over a thousand Benin Bronzes will soon return to Nigeria from Germany. The Commission is working closely with all relevant and major stakeholders to ensure that the collections eventually berth in a safe and comfortable environment for the viewing pleasure of Nigerians.

Historically Significant 9th – 11th Century Igbo-Ukwu Bronzes in National Museum Lagos’ Collection Selected for Bank of America’s 2022 Art Conservation Project

December 07, 2022 – The National Museum Lagos has been selected as a beneficiary of the Bank of America Arts Conservation Project 2022 and is among 19 major global art conservation projects to be selected. Funding from the grant will be used to restore 350 Igbo-Ukwu bronze objects, historically inimitable, they come from a culture that may be the earliest known example of bronze casting in the region. This grant is the first ever funding received for the conservation of the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes.

Bank of America’s Art Conservation Project has supported the conservation of more than 6,000 individual pieces since 2010, including paintings, sculptures, and archaeological and architectural pieces of critical importance to cultural heritage and the history of art. More than 200 projects across 39 countries have been managed by non-profit cultural institutions that receive grant funding to conserve historically or culturally significant works of art that are in danger of deterioration.

The National Museum Lagos will restore the Igbo-Ukwu Bronzes, elaborately decorated bronze works dating from the 9^th century, in need of conservation to keep the objects in proper form. The Bank of America Art Conservation Project grant will enable the Nigerian National Museum to conduct a structural analysis, consolidation and full conservation and treatment of a total of 350 culturally significant objects of Igbo-Ukwu origin in its

collection, beginning with a selection of 150 Igbo-Ukwu bronze objects. The conservation process will take approximately 8 months on site at the National Museum and will involve support from an expert conservator.

“The grant provides an avenue for proper and adequate conservation of Igbo-Ukwu objects, especially some that are already corroded and needs to be restored. It allows the National Commission for Museums and Monuments the opportunity to exhibit objects in their best states for public education and enlightenment.” said Abba Isa Tijani, Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Nigeria.

The discovery of the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes was accidental, found in 1938 when a man tried to dig a water cistern in his compound in a village called Igbo-Ukwu- Anambra State Nigeria. Upon scientific excavation of the site in 1959, radiocarbon dating placed the site to 850 CE, which could make the Igbo-Ukwu culture the earliest known example of bronze casting in the region. These Igbo-Ukwu bronzes also represent the earliest examples of copper alloy (copper and tin) art in Sub-Saharan Africa. The people of Igbo-Ukwu were likely among the first groups of West Africans to use the lost wax hollow casting technique, also known as cire perdue, to produce these bronze sculptures.

The National Museum Lagos is one of 19 significant art restoration projects selected for the 2022 Bank of America Art Conservation Project, representing a diverse range of artistic styles, media, and cultural traditions across the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Ghana, Ireland, Spain, France and Mexico. Institutions receiving support from Bank of America this year include, National Museum of Ghana, Notre-Dame de Paris, Trinity College Library Dublin, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza Madrid, and more.
