The artifacts digitization project at the National Museum Lagos is progressing with remarkable dedication and innovation. This project involves creating detailed 3D scans of artifacts, ensuring they are preserved digitally and accessible to a broader audience. These digital representations allow people worldwide to explore and appreciate our cultural heritage, regardless of their physical location.

Digitizing artifacts is not merely about creating digital copies; it encompasses a comprehensive process of tagging each object with relevant information. This meticulous tagging includes historical context, cultural significance, and other pertinent details, transforming the digital artifact into an immersive and educational experience. By doing so, we provide an enriched understanding of each piece, fostering a deeper appreciation of our heritage.

The benefits of this project are manifold. First and foremost, digitization helps preserve artifacts for future generations. Physical artifacts are vulnerable to deterioration over time due to environmental factors and handling. By creating digital versions, we safeguard these treasures against potential loss or damage. Furthermore, digital artifacts can be used in a wide array of digital solutions, including virtual exhibitions, educational platforms, and interactive applications. These applications offer innovative ways to engage with history and culture, making learning more dynamic and interactive.

The project also aligns with global trends in museum practices, where digital innovation is increasingly playing a pivotal role. By digitizing our collection, the National Museum Onikan joins a growing number of institutions worldwide that leverage technology to enhance their offerings. This not only increases our museum’s visibility on the global stage but also attracts a diverse audience, ranging from researchers and educators to history enthusiasts and casual visitors.

The success of this project is largely due to the collaborative efforts of our dedicated partners. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to @truedismedia and @ak0ji_ for their unwavering commitment and hard work. Their expertise and passion have been instrumental in driving this project forward, ensuring that each artifact is meticulously scanned and accurately tagged.

The ongoing artifacts digitization project is a testament to the NCMM’s commitment to preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. By embracing modern technology, we are making significant strides in ensuring that our history is not only preserved but also made accessible to a wider audience. This project exemplifies how traditional heritage and modern technology can converge to create powerful educational tools and experiences.

The digitization project at the National Museum Lagos represents a forward-thinking approach to cultural preservation. As we continue this journey, we remain committed to enhancing the accessibility and educational value of our collections. We look forward to the continued progress and the many exciting possibilities that lie ahead. Thank you once again to our partners and supporters for their invaluable contributions to this transformative endeavor.

The National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), in collaboration with ILTA 54, is excited to announce the formation of a strategic road map team. This initiative represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to revitalize the museums and monuments sector, ensuring that it achieves the profound impact we envision.

The strategic road map team has been meticulously assembled, drawing on the expertise and experience of accomplished individuals from the public sector, private sector, and academia. This diverse group brings a wealth of knowledge and innovative thinking, which is essential for crafting unique recommendations to breathe new life into our cultural institutions.

The primary goal of this initiative is to develop a comprehensive plan that will not only enhance the visibility and relevance of our museums and monuments but also foster a deeper appreciation of our rich cultural heritage among Nigerians. By leveraging the diverse perspectives and expertise of the team members, we aim to identify and implement strategies that will make our museums and monuments more engaging, educational, and accessible to the public.

One of the key elements of this initiative is the infusion of fresh perspectives into the museum and monument space. We believe that the innovative ideas and approaches that will emerge from this collaboration will significantly enhance our efforts. By working closely with the highly skilled and dedicated staff at NCMM, the strategic road map team will ensure that our cultural institutions are not only preserved but also celebrated and cherished by future generations.

The collaborative nature of this initiative is crucial to its success. By fostering strong partnerships between the public and private sectors, as well as academia, we can create a more dynamic and sustainable model for our museums and monuments. These partnerships will enable us to leverage resources, share best practices, and develop programs that resonate with a broad audience.

We are confident that this initiative will lead to a renewed sense of pride in our national heritage. Our museums and monuments are not just repositories of history; they are living spaces that reflect our collective identity and aspirations. By revitalizing these spaces, we can inspire a new generation of Nigerians to connect with their cultural roots and appreciate the rich tapestry of our nation’s history.

In anticipation of the valuable contributions that the strategic road map team will make, we extend our heartfelt thanks to each member. Their commitment to this project is invaluable, and we look forward to the innovative solutions and recommendations they will bring forth. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and are eager to begin this transformative journey together.

The formation of the strategic road map team marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to enhance the NCMM’s impact. With the collaborative efforts of our team members, partners, and dedicated staff, we are poised to take the commission to new heights. On 14th of July 2024, marked a significant occasion as our Director General Olugbile Holloway welcomed a distinguished delegation from the U.S. President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement (U.S. PAC-ADE). This visit underscored the strengthening ties and ongoing dialogue between the United States and our country, particularly in fostering deeper connections with the African diaspora.

The delegation was comprised of notable figures, including Williams Stevens, the U.S. Consul General, and Mr. Kevin Young, the Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. They were accompanied by other esteemed representatives from the U.S. PAC-ADE, each bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the discussions.

The delegation’s itinerary began at the historic National Museum Onikan, a site of immense cultural and historical significance. Here, they were greeted warmly and given a comprehensive tour of the museum’s extensive collections. The exhibits at the National Museum Onikan provided the delegation with a profound understanding of our nation’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of the African diaspora. This visit also allowed for the exchange of ideas on preserving and promoting cultural heritage, as well as potential collaborations on future projects.

Following the visit to the National Museum, the delegation proceeded to the John K. Randle Center for Yoruba Culture and History. This modern cultural hub serves as a testament to the vibrancy and resilience of Yoruba culture. At the John K. Randle Center, the delegation was received by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The Governor’s reception was a highlight of the visit, providing an opportunity for high-level discussions on cultural exchange, education, and economic partnerships.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his enthusiasm for the delegation’s visit and emphasized the importance of such engagements in strengthening bilateral relations. He highlighted the shared history and cultural bonds between Nigeria and the United States, particularly through the African American community. The Governor also discussed ongoing initiatives in Lagos State aimed at fostering cultural preservation, education, and economic development, and explored avenues for collaboration with the U.S. PAC-ADE.

Williams Stevens, the U.S. Consul General, conveyed the U.S. government’s commitment to deepening ties with the African diaspora. He spoke about the significant role that cultural institutions play in this process and commended the efforts of Nigerian institutions in preserving and promoting African heritage. Mr. Kevin Young added to this by sharing insights from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, illustrating how cultural diplomacy can bridge gaps and foster mutual understanding.

The discussions were fruitful, with both sides expressing a strong desire to continue working together on various fronts. Potential areas of collaboration include joint exhibitions, educational exchange programs, and initiatives to promote cultural tourism. These efforts aim not only to celebrate shared heritage but also to create economic opportunities and foster mutual respect and understanding.

The visit of the U.S. PAC-ADE delegation, led by Williams Stevens and Kevin Young, was a significant step in reinforcing the ties between our nations. Director General Olugbile Holloway and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s warm reception and productive discussions set a positive tone for future engagements. The exchange of ideas and the shared commitment to cultural preservation and education signal a promising path forward, one that will benefit both nations and honor the rich tapestry of the African diaspora.
